Frederick, Md. (November 30, 2022) — techfrederick member, Edgewater Federal Solutions, Inc. (Edgewater) teamed up with the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation to provide the Boys & Girls Club of Frederick County with a high-tech science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) center. The center contains state-of-the-art equipment, including a 3D printer, Snap Circuits, Ozobots and Bee Bots.

Leaders for Edgewater, the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation, and the Boys & Girls Club celebrated the occasion with a ribbon-cutting and demonstration of the high-tech tools. The new center will allow local children to stretch their imaginations and discover a love of scientific learning.

“We are extremely proud to support the growing minds of our community with the opening of this STEM Center. The Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation has created a phenomenal program to foster an understanding, application, and love for STEM concepts and practices,” stated Lorelie Yockman, Edgewater’s Chief Administrative Officer. “I can tell you first-hand that the skills learned within this center will be extremely valuable to these children, their families, and our community.”

“This STEM Center is going to emphasize to the kids how fun STEM can be, and we really want to encourage them to get involved in these fields,” said Timika Thrasher, Boys & Girls Club of Frederick County CEO. “We’re really fortunate for Edgewater and the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation because we know how costly this tech is and it’s not something we’d normally be able to bring to our sites. I’m excited that my staff and myself will be trained on how to use these tools so we can teach the kids, and all learn from each other.”

The Ripken Foundation provides training, curriculum, activity kits, and staff support. The organization has opened more than 260 STEM centers nationwide.

“We believe all children deserve the opportunity to explore their passions and learn about the paths available to them, especially in this ever-evolving technology-based world,” said Steve Salem, President & CEO of the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation. “The Ripken Foundation is proud to provide curriculum and teacher training to ensure students can get the most out of these new STEM tools.”
